Judy Hopelain - Engagement Partner

Crimson Principal Esther LimJudy Hopelain is an executive level strategic marketing professional who has helped to grow three consulting practices, conceive and launch two multichannel Internet-based businesses with responsibility for business strategy, channel development and marketing, and been an advisor to three Internet startups. Her background includes 20+ years experience driving growth for brands like HP, Chevron, payless ShoeSource and American Girl through customer-centricity. Judy’s expertise is in strategy and positioning, customer insight and activation, business development, and integrated marketing.

Judy also teaches brand strategy and management at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. She is a member of the American Marketing Association’s core team for the annual Strategic Marketing Conference, and also serves as an expert witness on consumer marketing.

Most of Judy’s career has focused on seizing revenue opportunities for multi-channel marketers. As Acting SVP of eCommerce for Visa USA in the mid-90s, Judy helped to develop and implement the company’s Internet strategy to and ensure the brand’s share of B2B and B2C transactions in the emerging Internet channel. At Illuminations, she ran the e-commerce and catalog businesses, launched the company’s web channel, led its online marketing initiatives, and built its web team. Judy grew web revenue 30x in 18 months while growing catalog sales incrementally. In consulting, Judy started at The Boston Consulting Group's Los Angeles office. She was an Associate Partner in Accenture’s West Coast strategy practice and a leader in its North American Retail market unit. At Prophet Brand Strategy, Judy was the San Francisco Managing Partner, led client relationships, and wrote and spoke extensively on measuring brand impact.

Judy founded Pure Gravy to do hands-on strategy consulting. Pure Gravy partners with Brand Amplitude, Exponential Edge and Crimson Consulting as needed to deliver insight-based, practical, recommendations to B2B and B2C clients to drive business results.

Judy has advised Internet startups aimed at getting consumers to take action. Companies include Netconversions (acquired by aQuantive), CloudPop (a Private-Label Gift Registry and Wishlist solution for retailers), and Quick Dog, (whose AI-based product matching logic was acquired by Lands' End). Her latest startup role is driving the recapitalization of Two Smart Dogs (www.twosmartdogs.com), whose aim is to help people of all ages to learn something new by connecting them with the great class providers in their neighborhoods.

Judy has an M.P.P. from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a B.A. from UC Davis.
